how DOES the voting at national convention work?

THE SET-UP

  1. The convention planners will specify a room, a day, and a time for the voting.
  2. You will queue to vote in the appropriate voting line based on the province for which you are a delegate, and alphabetically by surname.
  3. You will be required to show your delegate badge and the ID normally required when voting (e.g., a driver's license), and once this is verified, you will be given a voting ballot listing the BC election candidates in alphabetical order by surname.

THE VOTING

  1. You will vote for your chosen candidates in preferential order, starting with your #1 and ending whenever you choose.  You do not need to vote for all the candidates on the ballot - you may decline to enter a number next to some names.
  2. The vote count will begin by counting all the #1 and #2 votes for each candidate.  If the first-placed candidate at the close of the count has the support of 50% plus one of the electors, that candidate will be declared elected.
  3.  If the second-placed candidate at the close of the first vote count also has the support of 50% plus one of the electors, that candidate will also be declared elected.
  4. If not, the vote count will continue, in each round eliminating candidates from the bottom of the list and factoring in votes from further down the preference list (beginning with the #3 choices), until a second candidate receives 50% + 1 of the vote.
